KWD Kupplungswerk Dresden GmbH

KWD Kupplungswerk Dresden GmbH can look back on a lengthy engineering tradition that dates back to the period of the industrial revolution.
In the Plauensche Grund, a germ cell of industrialisation in Saxony, a strong demand for machine and machines developed in the mid 19th century.

In 1887 the company Vogel und Schlegel came into being which was founded as a repair workshop for machines. It devoted itself to the manufacture of steam engines, transmission systems and couplings. Irmscher und Witte that was founded in 1868 started producing lathes from 1933 onwards. The company Meteor (founded in 1903) had its name changed to Vasanta Maschinenfabrik AG, a manufacturer of sewing machines and variable gear drives, in 1922. Confectionery machines, gears and continuously variable gear drives have been produced at the Astra company since 1908.

In 1952 VEB Kupplungs- und Triebwerksbau Dresden emerged as a successor of these four companies. The VEB Kupplungswerk Dresden was formed through the merger with the Kupplungswerk Freital in 1982 from which the Kupplungswerk Dresden GmbH emerged on 30 May 1990.

In the course of the further development of Kupplungswerk Dresden GmbH as an innovative problem solver in the drive technology sector, and as a specialist enterprise for the production of couplings and drive components, new fields were penetrated, new sales structures were established and the company KWD Kupplungswerk Dresden GmbH was founded effective as of 1 January 1993.

Our representative office in Moscow commenced operations on 1 February 2012 to strengthen the company’s traditionally important trading links with Russia. The necessary presence, technical service and coupling overhauls were ensured for the Chinese market through KWD Couplings (Changzhou) Co., Ltd. that was founded in the spring of 2015.

KWD Kupplungswerk Dresden GmbH is an active participant of the industrial research community within the framework of the Research Association for Power Transmission Engineering (FVA), as a result of which we promptly have the very latest findings at our disposal. In addition to modern CAD systems, state-of-the-art simulation and calculation tools (SimualtionX, Ansys) are used. Using powerful programming systems highly complex components can be prepared rapidly and through the use of high quality manufacturing technology in the shortest space of time.

The linking of development, design and manufacturing enables us to flexibly respond to all market requirements.

Couplings from Dresden are used in machines and installations for the extraction of raw materials, in the mechanical engineering sector, in construction and agricultural machinery, in wind power plants, in steel and rolling mill equipments and many other drives, and are rated highly due to their functionality, robustness and reliability.

The company has gained a leading position in the field of rail vehicle construction in the past few years. With products that are demanding in design and manufacturing technology terms we have drive system solutions for the most diverse driven bogies of high speed trains, metros, suburban railway systems, trams, monorail vehicles and locomotives with low LCC costs which prove their worth throughout all the world's continents.

CAD / CAM process consistency guarantees, in addition to the acceleration of the processes, a high and stable product quality, which is ensured by means of a well equipped modern quality department. All processes comply with DIN EN ISO 9001 on the basis of which the company is regularly audited.
